X-Men: Apocolypse A Fan's Perspective
I’ve never been a fan of critics. They think they are the end all be all of a project. X-Men: Apocalypse was given horrible reviews by the critics; Rotten Tomatoes, Robert Ebert, The New York Times just to name a few. They said it was weak, boring and jam packed with too much EVERYTHING for the movie to make sense. Well those people can shove it. XMen: Apocalypse is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year.

Yes it was cool to see baby Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops; yes it was nice to see how Professor X lost his hair (spoiler alert!), but the story itself was profound. You have Apocalypse (played by Oscar Isaacs), a mutant that can collect powers by body swapping and for all intents and purposes is a god. He uses the pretense that the world is a messed up place and it is HIS job to make it better... and oh by the way he needs you all to worship him and do his bidding. He has no loyalty to his followers, doesn’t care about the loss of life or the destruction he has caused and is a power hunger megalomaniac.
Apocalypse’s ideas are very hard to compare to anybody in today’s society. He wants to destroy all governments because he feels they cause trouble and they don’t help the people. He feels he can do a better job than all the superpowers combined. While he’s a megalomaniac, he’s one in his own category. You can try to compare him to a terrorist but you can’t. He wants to destroy western governments and their culture as well as the people. He doesn’t want them as followers. He wants all of them eliminated. You can try to compare him to Hitler, but Hitler’s goal was to make Germany supreme and damn the world for getting in his way.
Apocalypse is the perfect bad guy to go up against Xavier and his fledgling team. After the last two movies of us despising Magneto and Mystique, they are redeemed in this movie (but of course Magneto had to be a jackass first). We meet Wolverine for the first time. When I say first time and Wolverine, I mean as in fresh military experiment Wolverine, back in the days when he was Weapon X and let me tell you, he is a beast (I mean the figuratively and literally). He meets the mini version of the love of his life and it’s a very touching moment. By the end of the movie though we meet the beginnings of the X-Men. Some things of course have changed. Jubilee is not a part of the group despite going to school with them (which is inaccurate as she was a teenager when they were adults), there is no Rouge, and there’s the addition of Quicksilver and Mystique. I would see this movie a million times because I’m sure I can find all sorts of cool tidbits I’ve missed. I don’t know about you but I’ll be waiting for the Blu- ray release date so I can watch this on repeat. Oh and by the way-NEVER LISTEN TO THE CRITICS! You may miss out on what can be one of the most awesome movies of the year.
