Sailor Boom: Operation Elsewhere

Sailor Boom: Operation Elsewhere

I’d like to start off with a quote by the Notorious B.I.G:

“You know very well who you are, don’t let‘em hold you down, reach for the stars.”

I’ve covered Sailor Boom for a few years now, since 2019. When I first saw DJ HighGnx and DJ Dimple at the famous The Sultan Room in BKLYN, NYC; I found myself flustered as I couldn’t describe who they were exactly in the early years. The living embodiment of anime characters, two dope queens killing the DJ scene with a variety of Baltimore club, 90’s Hip Hop, Afrobeats, House Baile Funk, Trap music, and, let’s not forget, anime-based theme songs? To put it mildly, these women are bad ass DJs who take no shorts in the pop culture scene as they continue to captivate with their glamour, care-free, yet hardcore behavior, and supernatural performances.

Post Pandemic and they are killing it yet again as they have moved from their famed BK spot, The Sultan Room to one of Bklyn’s neatest nightspots, ELSEWHERE. For the unfamiliar, it is one of the most premier spots in Bushwick, Brooklyn for live music, good bevs, and a great time. A multi-room music venue, nightclub, and arts space, this is the embodiment of what it means to bring creatives under one roof to just be. Waiting on line, I was first directed by security to have my vaccination card, and money ready. Safety First. Being part of the press, I was able to pay at a reduced cost, and there was one aspect of the entry method I surely fell in love with; the touch reader.

Read Me…Digitally

No physical interactions, no physical exchanging of funds, digital interactions only. The pandemic made sure that physical contact and the medium in which to pay for goods and services was no longer welcomed at certain enterprises, especially here. At Elsewhere, machines worked in a two-way favor. First, you had to link your card to the club. No more card holds, no more “what charge is this?” moments. Next, you placed your order with the server and when all was correct, you paid, tipped, and waited for your drink. The way you paid? Your wristband, the device that guaranteed you paid to get in is now your wallet. My, have the times changed.

The Atmosphere

Elsewhere’s structural atmosphere read like a warehouse. Doors, spaces, steps, main stages, and airtight security. NAVY Seals tight. Heavily structured, I give props to the security teams (Shinobi) as they ensured that the patrons were not only safe, they were secured as they enjoyed their libations and music. Usually, with any Sailor Boom party, twerk competitions happen on stage, not here. There were linemen who were ready to “extract, escort, or remove” in peace, any physical deterrents if need be, with respect.

Sailor Boom Infinite

The show’s main attraction, DJ Dimple and DJ HighGnx form the group, Sailor Boom. Their evolution in pop culture’s hip-hop DJ scene has been more than extraordinary. These astonishing DJs utilized the power of the internet and social media, to create a musical brand unlike any other. With special guests Tiffie Starchild, Xero Gravity, and Black Krystel emceeing some of their events, seeing them move from that first time in the Sultan Room to here is nothing short of spectacular. Staying true to their mantra, they’ve continued to focus on pop culture, diversity, and equality, all while staying true to their favorite anime shows and showing their manga-based imagery. I also have to give a shout-out to the guest emcee, Xero Gravity, she was an absolute delight as she kept us entertained with her dance moves and energy.

What I also noticed at Elsewhere, was that they were now entrancing others who didn’t know Sailor Boom, and their performances. And while the clan, in typical fashion, memorized us with their energy, I noticed how some spectators left their venues to join in on the revelry. However, as they overpowered the DJs ecosystem, the music stopped and one of the DJs grabbed the mic to acknowledge the crowd respectfully:

DJ Dimple:

“So look, if you come from other places in ELSEWHERE and you wanna hang out at the party, amazing. But, if you’re at the front of the stage? I would maybe suggest that you fallout to the back, to make room for the people that did spend the coins to come to this party.….” And to that statement, the room started to provide an applause while others were respectful enough to listen and move accordingly. That’s Love. As she concluded by saying “…and thank you for being an ally”, I had to sit back and relish in the moment of this experience. Outsiders are starting to hear about them more and more and are willing to leave what they paid for with other DJs to come to the musical rich performances created by a phenomenal group of women……and they’re taking over, one venue at a time.

Sailor Boom continues to mesmerize patrons as they jump, shake, twerk, and provide viewers a fantastic show that always leaves you entertained, wanting more. Their approach to providing the masses with music is a vibe you have to experience. The energy between the DJs is epic; gargantuan even, as they switched off the turntables on cue, and within milliseconds, caught each other’s rhythm. Their attention to detail is matched by only a few DJs who have become legendary, and as the twerk competition was altered this time, that part of the evening didn’t disappoint either as many took their derrieres to the front of the stage and danced for prizes.

Overall, the walls couldn’t hold them at The Sultan Room, and now, at Elsewhere, they’re reaching maximum capacity. Sailor Boom continues to pack venues as they use their Musical Boom Jitsu; causing attendees to exchange energies, laughter, and fancy footwork. Honestly, they are going to need a bigger space again as many more are coming in, showing love and supporting one of the greatest DJ groups in pop culture to date. In my opinion, these artists are:

Making music by moonlight
Showing love in the daylight
Never running from a real fight
They are the one called Sailor Boom

Sailor Boom is reaching for the stars and beyond in 2022!!!
