Sailor Boom and their Musical Boom-Jutsu

Sailor Boom and their Musical Boom-Jutsu

It’s been a year and a half since I last saw them in BKLYN. They appeared @ Blerdcon 2021 and they killed it as their musical mashup and DJ stylings led to amazing dance routines and wondrous fanfare, and, as they didn’t disappoint in Virginia with their musical genjutsu, they certainly lived up to their signature “BOOM” as they reclaimed their pop culture throne with blends of Cosplay x Anime-Themed Music x Hip-Hop to create a unique sound, a musical universe filled with love and feminine mystique. What draws me to their music, I’m not sure. Yet, this dynamic duo, DJ Dimple and DJ Highgnx, once again welcomed us, the fans, to an elevated state of consciousness as they made us forgot where we were and what we were experiencing altogether; a pandemic recovery, facemasks, and the Dreaded Delta Variant.

Bushwick, BKLYN, NYC. At the famed Sultan Room, the Sailor Boom Clan used their Illusionary techniques to mesmerize us with their fantastic light show, music, and energy. As we explored the night as our alter egos, (Sailor Moon Scouts, Anime Cows, Himiko Toga, and many others), an evening with Sailor Boom was all that was on our minds, but as they started the festivities, I have to say, this event seemed different somehow, more colorful, more alive. This wave was different from the one I attended before….

Did they train in Vegeta’s famed gravity room with their turntables? As their mixes slowly generated momentum, the crowd responded back in kind. I couldn’t help but think, ‘did they become familiar with their power-levels during the pandemic and said, ‘let’s go higher? let’s get stronger?’ When last I saw them (aside from Virginia), they were rocking, but not at this level. Their power levels are most certainly “over 9000” now, yet, there was still something unfamiliar in this showcase and I couldn’t put my finger on it.

Was it the uniforms? Gone were the signature Sailor Moon costumes for the evening and replaced were the Hyakkaou Private Academy school uniforms from the acclaimed anime and manga hit, Kakegurui. The adoption of the outfits, in all honestly, are amazing. I absolutely love the new look and in retrospect (and maybe I’m looking too much into it) they took a gamble on themselves and won big. Pun Intended.

Now, I’m left wondering, which character are they resembling?  Is it Yumeko Jabami? Mary Saotome? Sayaka Igarashi? Or even, dare I say it, Kirari Momobami? (I later found out that they were Yumeko and Mary, but still, those outfits are amazing!!!)

Was it their stage presence? As they continued playing, they, with measured precision, alternated between sets, going left with one song and right with the other. During the sound modification, I see DJ Dimple, moving and checking the sets. In some way DJ Dimple of the Sailor Boom Clan is the analytical ninja, intricately making sure that the chords interact directly with one another. Such impressive tenacity. I see DJ Highgnx, eyeing the crowd, surveying the emotions and reading the room. She too is analytical; however, tonight, she’s seeing through your soul and snuffing out any boredom, if there is any. Then I heard it….

At first, I thought it was my ears playing tricks, but then I heard the new sound again. ”Boom”, then again. What is this beat? It appears that a new melody has entered their musical portfolio, a new “Boom-Jutsu” of sorts. For now, I’ll call their new move, T.B.E, The Boom ECHO. Not the echo that one hears when one screams in a valley, but an entirely new sound. Refined and redistributed throughout the speakers, I won’t describe the details here, but it’s an innovative signature move, I hope I hear it again. It’s Lit af.

Or was it LOVE? In between their sets, they continuously hopped off the stage and hugged the fans, expressing “thank yous” and “miss yous” to all. I even received a hug from DJ Highgnx out of pure emotion and as the crowd continued to show love throughout the night, they kept returning to the stage, even more powerful than before. It’s as though all the love shared was collected into a “giant spirit love bomb” and as the night progressed, they absorbed the bomb and redistributed it, nonstop, to the crowd as they gave us more of their illusionary musical jutsu and as more and more fans came in, the love grew exponentially. A year and a half is a long time not seeing each other and to be in close confines with no fear of becoming infected was the most beautiful display ever. That continuous collected love, with its constant recycling, now held us and them captive. Whatever it was, their emergence from the pandemic made them stronger with their musical chakra faster and more refined. As they rocked the crowd, better than ever, looking at them, I even said to myself, “they’re going to need a bigger venue, they’re major”.

The Sailor Boom Clan created a new set of rules for what it’s like to be a DJ in the pop culture spectrum post covid. To them, to stop progressing means death and as they walk a path of victory in the DJ sphere, they defy defeat as they continuously train and self-analyze their DJ abilities with a fine-tooth comb. Their time in the DJ gravity room has proven successful as we heard their new Boom-Jutsu throughout the rest of the night and as we rejoiced in its symphonic distribution, they provided us with Hip-Hop and anime themes, in a safe vaccinated ecosystem. They certainly, as I stated before, ‘DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!

And as DJ Highgnx said these words:

“Yes (3x) and just, real quickly, I just wanna say, I appreciate every single one of y’all for showing up and showing out tonight!!! Dimple and I started this party two years ago, when we had no idea what it was going to be, we were just two fuckin’ nerds sitting in the house watching anime and playing Playstation, like shiiiit!! Oh! And then we can also DJ, there’s that and we were like, “Shit, how do we turn this into a thing together?” and we motherfucking did and I’m so glad we are post Covid doing the fucking thing….THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING OUT TONIGHT……”

I came to the realization what that feeling was, PASSION. The love of chasing one’s dream, the love of being and becoming successful in that dream. For Sailor Boom Clan’s, DJ Dimple and DJ Highgnx, their passion for their craft, their love for the music, is leading them to great success and the flowers that come with it.

As this night demonstrates a great example of their success, their journey is just beginning and I for one can’t see what they do next.

God Bless the DJs!!

Respect!!!
