BlerdCon’24 Friday Edition - We Outside!!!

BlerdCon’24 Friday Edition - We Outside!!!

Joseph Watkins Da Watcha

Rain couldn’t stop the festivities from happening at the Hyatt Crystal City Hotel in Arlington, Virginia, this weekend. A lot has changed in one year; a lot has not. Gone is the main stage, replaced by a smaller platform that caters to indie artists and guests. There were more food trucks, more tables, but no chairs to be seen. They did shut down the street this time, allowing people to have more freedom outside the venue. A fair trade, I believe, for greatness and safety.

SideNote: It was a little hard to find the stage at first, but the sound system led the way as DJs mixed and kept the guests entertained. It was a little sad that the indie artist stage wasn’t bigger.

As for the con floor, there were many more vendors to choose from. More stories, more art, more fans of pop culture and 'the culture.' #Shoutout to the creatives as well. With so many more vendors, I was overjoyed to see that this con is growing.

Friday’s adventure consisted of a pleasant walkthrough of the convention floors. Last year, two-thirds of the hotel was filled with vendors; this year, it’s a full house. Washington Hall was brimming with new items and positive energy as I saw new images of pop culture in the anime, nerd and Blerd perspective. This time I was also able to catch a comedy show with the amazing and hilarious Roxxy Haze and guests.

 Comedy Show

Roxxy Haze killed it as host for the Blerdcon comedy show. Her antics had the audience laughing throughout as she refenced short men, tag team wrestling and an interesting “tribute” to Khloe Thomas. She effortlessly engaged with the crowd, delivering sharp punchlines and hilarious improvisations. Her comedy and character is both a pleasure to watch and engaging. Her reference to short men still hits hard...

“Short King....I am not a kingdom”

The lineup of comedians chosen for this event was diverse, each with their own personal style catering to pop culture. Whether it was clever commentary on January 6th, the latest accessories for video game characters (bows and arrows), unlocking breasts with references from Legend of Zelda, dick pics, Dungeons and Dragons, lesbians eating ice cream sandwiches (with an interpretation), or boba tea, whips and mushroom chocolates, there was something for everyone.

Each performer brought a unique perspective, keeping the audience entertained and on their toes throughout the event. Shoutout to the comedians (and interpreters) for this amazing event as they both entertained and enlighten us. You had to be there.

I also have to acknowledge the cosplayers as many customized and rocked their fits despite the weather and climate.

Blerdcon ’24 is off to a great start. While some changes have taken place, many have been for the better (need chairs fam) as many were stating in passing that with Blerdcon, some “love it here”.

Respect.
