Instagram is a powerful weapon….so much so that ‘IG’ has transformed the advertised DJ scene by swapping flyers and cards that highlights parties and events to brief party videos and one-minute ads. With the public music (DJ Parties) scene rapidly changing, DJs are fashioning new ways to promote their music and their brands.
Region 99 managed to catch a glimpse of one of those brands: The Phenomenal Sailor Boom. 2 Female DJs, who are using anime and hip-hop to bring to light, the power of cosplay, twerking, video games and nerd culture to the new millennium. Established in 2019, they are making a name for themselves in the public music sphere by providing passion, energy and above all, Love of Nerd Culture in music form. Named, DJ Highgnx and DJDimple_BK; these extraordinary women, are using their anime inspirations to create a new avenue of what it means to DJ, party and do nerd-shyt!!!
Intrigued and curious, I attended a Sailor Boom party in Bklyn, NY to see if the hype was worth the ‘Gram. Housed at the Sultan Room @ The Turk’s Inn, located in the creative center of Buskwick, Brooklyn; I was the first in line to see this Dynamic Duo in person. As the line became jammed packed, fear and hesitation took over as I wanted to see how they would perform. Paralleling a fan who wants to see their favorite artist, as soon as they opened the doors to the scene, I entered and was captivated by the ambiance of what they created, with a loud Boom3, they immediately moved the crowd with reminiscent songs from the 90’s-2020’s, blended it with video game eccentrics and theme songs and poured anime’ based themes into the atmosphere.
What made it even more spectacular was within the first 15-20 minutes, the room began to fill like water; very similar to how that same liquid entered the Titanic; fast and with fury. Indeed, Sailor Boom knows how to pack a house and they are truly in tuned with their ‘quirks’ as they hypnotized the crowd with their melodic harmonies without fail. Intertwining multiple musical genres they are creating an entirely new atmosphere of praise and worship.
An hour and a half has passed, fully submerged in the Sailor Boom culture, surrounded by fans of these DJs, the world of Sailor Boom is growing. They are rapidly acquiring a following of party goers who continue to show their love and dedication to them, their love of anime’ and of course, cosplay. Additionally, what makes the party even better was the rich cultural tapestry that encompassed these DJs. Multiple faces of color, different diversities; they all came as one to honor the ‘Goddesses of the Turntables’.
Reflecting, it’s been a while since I saw a party scene like this: Black, Hispanic, White, Male, Female, Non-Binary, Nerds, Jocks, Cosplayers, Superheroes, Supervillains, etc. These DJs are breaking down barriers and doing it with the power of anime’. What made it even more spectacular was that as the party was going on, this event led into Black History Month, with DJ Highgnx constantly reminding us that it’s a celebration of Blackness. What a phenomenal DJ. Thank you for the shout out and blessings to your accomplishments.
Music plays such a vital role in our lives that, we can easily remember a song that wasn’t in some way connected to our emotional psyche. For example, some songs bring happiness, sadness, laughter, togetherness, even provide us with energy to get us through the day. For me, when I wake up, depending on the day, I might be listening to Trap and a Dream by ASAP Ferg to get me energized for my meeting or Jay-Z’s, ‘Forever Young’ to remember why I do what I do. Either way, music continuously and ceremoniously plays a pivotal part in our lives and with technology changing the landscape of music, it’s necessary to either embrace it or get left behind.
The DJ, once the epicenter of the musical sphere, are too, evolving. As they showcase their ‘quirks’ both in person and on the ‘Gram, they are still relevant as they bring not only the hip-hop, but the nerd culture and all elements associated with it.
Sailor Boom are those DJ’s of the new millennium, incorporating the past and present, focusing on what it means to play video games, watch anime’ and bump your favorite Hip-Hop. They are making ‘Nerdom’ very hip and cool, making the world realize that it doesn’t matter if you watch anime’ or could hum your favorite theme song to Pokémon. What matters is the music, the togetherness and above all the Love of the Culture!!!
Sailor Boom are encompassing all that is right in the world of Female Empowerment, DJ-ing, Cosplay, Hip-Hop and Entrepreneurism. Overall, these are the DJ’s you need to listen to right now!!!
