Awesome Con: 'Over 9000' Saturday Prequel Edition
For Saturday’s edition, I had to write this as a prequel because there is too much to say. So rather than kill myself as the con is coming to an end, I will just put out a prequel that expresses my thoughts here for Saturday.
Washington D.C.’s Convention center is truly immense as Awesome Con laid its roots as the premier go to con of the DC area..
Awesome Con on a Saturday swelled to a limit unlike any other. Honestly, the wave of cosplay and patrons never stopped flowing as the great halls of the convention center burst with those cash paying fans of pop culture. What ultimately made this con exciting and great was that there was still so much space. With the extra spacing, this allowed you to walk, breathe and take pictures. Honestly, this place is like a castle!!! That could also be the reason why the Jacob Javitz Center is remodeling… its like an 1-room apartment compared to this place.
As for the merchandise and selling, vendors couldn’t stop dealing with customers as deals were discovered and must have items started to disappear from the con floor. Artists were still in high demand as some booths had a never-ending flow of patrons. UCC distributing still had the best deals of the day!!!
Cosplay as engulfed the scene as diverse groups encompassed and portrayed their best interpretations of their characters. What joy it was to see not one but many cultural groups represent their version of their iconic characters. Even families created a sensation as parents had their kids dressed up in some very colorful outfits.
Awesome Con’s ‘Over 9000’ power level was definitely shown here on Saturday as waves upon waves of cosplay, shopping, and panel discussions blessed those in attendance. As for the panels this year, there was a lot of controversial discussions in regards to topics on racism in anime and manga and highlighted the necessity of incorporating diverse writers when creating diverse characters.
Maybe its the spirit of Washington D.C. and how that energy of ‘never giving up’ seeps into everyone here? Or maybe it’s the fact that social media has highlighted all that is wrong in comics, cosplay, anime, movies and social media is now prompting individuals to fight for what is right in the industry? Whatever the case, these panel discussions brought to light some serious issues taking place in the realm of comic books and anime and as such, the panelists offered sound advice and research to continue this fight for equality and social justice in the pop culture industry.
As for now, I favorably recommend coming to this con. You won’t be disappointed. Also, a full Saturday report will be coming shortly. Now to explore Sunday.
